designing for inclusion: unboxing binaries
Co-presenter Erin Pienczykowski | Landen Costa, Emily Eichner, Hannah Caple, Dr. Denielle Emans
2024-2025
Description
This project investigates the ways branding reinforces outdated stereotypes and proposes a gender-neutral alternative that prioritizes inclusivity over traditional marketing tactics. By reimagining packaging with a focus on interests rather than gender, my co-presenter Erin and I demonstrate how design can evolve to be more inclusive. Our work challenges the industry to break free from restrictive binaries, fostering branding strategies that reflect the diverse identities of today’s consumers.
Presentations
This research was first presented with the Designing for Inclusion team at the 2025 Popular Culture Association (PCA) Conference in New Orleans. It was then presented at the 2025 Roger Williams University Student Academic Showcase and Honors (SASH) presentation. My co-presenter and I later presented our work again at the 2025 National Honors Collegiate Counsel (NHCC) Conference.
AIGA Get Out the Vote
First Year Research Experience (FYRE) Methods of Design Inquiry (MODI)
2024
Description
For this project, I went through a process of exploring how we can cater to a specific audience in the realm of politics while remaining nonpartisan. For my audience, I chose those of us out there who often feel overwhelmed by all of the available information relating to politics – for anyone who feels like they don’t know enough to vote or that feel politics just “isn’t my thing.” I wanted to express a feeling of comfortability and community to express that politics is for everyone, and you don’t need to be an expert to vote. This was a process of research and peer review.
Presentations
This work was presented at the 2024 Roger Williams University Student Academic Showcase and Honors (SASH) along with peers from the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) Methods of Design Inquiry group.
